DUA BETWEEN SUNSET AND BEDTIME
Be it known to you that the first thing you should do at sunset is to hurry to the mosque. When the sun is colored yellowish, you may say the following supplication:
اَمْسٰى ظُلْمِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِعَفْوِكَ
In this evening, my wrongdoing is taking shelter in Your pardon,
وَاَمْسَتْ ذُنُوْبِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرَةً بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ
my sins are taking shelter in Your forgiveness,
وَاَمْسٰى خَوْفِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِاَمَانِكَ
my fear is taking shelter in Your security,
وَاَمْسٰى ذُلِّىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِعِزِّكَ
my humility is taking shelter in Your dignity,
وَاَمْسٰى فَقْرِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِغِنَاكَ
my poverty is taking shelter in Your richness,
وَاَمْسٰى وَجْهِىَ الْبَالِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِوَجْهِكَ الدَّاۤئِمِ الْبَاقِىْ
and my mortal face is taking shelter in Your Face, the Undying and Perpetual.
اَللّٰهُمَّ اَلْبِسْنِىْ عَافِيَتَكَ
O Allah, (please) dress me with Your wellbeing,
وَغَشِّنِىْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ
cover me with Your mercy,
وَجَلِّلْنِىْ كَرَامَتَكَ
overshadow me with Your honoring,
وَقِنِىْ شَرَّ خَلْقِكَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ
and protect me against the evils of Your creatures— jinn and men.
يَاۤ اَللهُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيْمُ۔
O Allah! O All-beneficent! O All-merciful!
At that time, it is highly advisable to engage yourself in uttering expressions of glorification of Almighty Allah and implorations for His forgiveness, because this hour is as same honorable and estimable as the pre-sunrise hour, as Almighty Allah has said in the Holy Qur’an:
وَ سَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوْعِ الشَّمْسِ وَ قَبْلَ الْغُرُوُبِ۔
And sing the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting.
Imam al-Sadiq(a.s.) is reported to have said, “When the color of the sun changes (i.e. the sun is about to set), you must remember Allah the Almighty and Majestic. If you are at that hour with one who preoccupies you from this, you must leave him and supplicate.”
The supplication to be said at sunset is the following:
يَا مَنْ خَتَمَ النُّبُوَّةَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ
O He Who has sealed the Prophethood with Muhammad,
صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ
Allah may bless him and his Household,
اِخْتِمْ لِىْ فِىْ يَوْمِىْ هٰذَا بِخَيْرٍ
(please) seal with goodness this day of mine,
وَشَهْرِىْ بِخَيْرٍ
this month of mine,
وَسَنَتِىْ بِخَيْرٍ
this year of mine,
وَعُمْرِىْ بِخَيْرٍ۔
and my entire lifetime.
You may say the words of professing that there is no god save Allah and the words of seeking His protection, which will be mentioned in the coming chapter about the supplications in mornings and evenings. You may then put your hand on the head and pass it over your face. You may then hold your beard and say the following:
اَحَطْتُ عَلٰى نَفْسِىْ وَاَهْلِىْ
I include myself, my family,
وَمَالِىْ وَوَلَدِىْ
my property, and my sons,
مِنْ غَاۤئِبٍ وَشَاهِدٍ
both the absent and the present
بِاللّٰهِ الَّذِىْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ
with Allah save Whom there is no god,
عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ
the Knower of the unseen and the seen,
الرَّحْمٰنُ الرَّحِيْمُ
the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,
الْحَىُّ الْقَيُّوْمُ
the Ever-living, the Self-subsisting.
لَا تَاخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَّلَا نَوْمٌ۔۔۔۔
Slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep.
اَلْعَلِىُّ الْعَظِيْمُ۔
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His.
Who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission?
He knows what is before them and what is behind them,
and they cannot comprehend anything out of His knowledge except what He pleases.
His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth,
and the preservation of them both tires Him not,
and He is the Most High, the Great.
