The Supplication of Kumayl ibn Ziyad al-Nakha’i, one of the close disciples of Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen(a.s.).
This is one of the well-known supplications. Being the supplication of al-Khizr (a.s.)‘Allamah al-Majlisi says that it is the best of all supplications, which Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen(a.s.) taught to Kumayl, one of his best disciples. Recommendably, the supplication may be said during nights of mid-Sha’ban and every Thursday evening (i.e. the nights before Fridays). It is useful for protecting against the evil of enemies, for opening the gate of sustenance, and for forgiveness of sins. Both Shaykh al-Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus have recorded this supplication; rather, I am quoting it from the book of Misbah al-Mutahajjid as follows:
اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَسْئَلُكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ، الَّتِیْ وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَیْئٍ،
O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which embraces all things,
وَ بِقُوَّتِكَ الَّتِیْ قَھَرْتَ بِھَا كُلَّ شَیْئٍ،
by Your strength, through which You dominate all things
وَ خَضَعَ لَھَا كُلُّ شَیْئٍ،
toward which all things are humble,
وَّ ذَلَّ لَھَا كُلُّ شَیْئٍ،
and before which all things are lowly,
وَ بِجَبَرُوْتِكَ الَّتِیْ غَلَبْتَ بِھَا كُلَّ شَیْئٍ،
by Your invincibility through which You overwhelm all things,
وَّ بِعِزَّتِكَ الَّتِیْ لَا یَقُوْمُ لَھَا شَیْئٌ،
by Your might, which nothing can resist,
وَّ بِعَظَمَتِكَ الَّتِیْ مَلَاَتْ كُلَّ شَیْءٍ،
by Your tremendousness, which has filled all things,
وَّ بِسُلْطَانِكَ الَّذِیْ عَلٰی كُلَّ شَیْءٍ،
by Your authority, which towers over all thing,
وَّ بِوَجْھِكَ الْبَاقِیْ بَعْدَ فَنَاۤءِ كُلَّ شَیْءٍ،
by Your face, which subsists after the annihilation of all things,
وَّ بِاَسْمَاۤئِكَ الَّتِیْ مَلَاَتْ اَرْكَانَ كُلِّ شَیْءٍ،
by Your Names, which have filled the areas of all things,
وَّ بِعِلْمِكَ الَّذِیْ اَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَیْءٍ،
by Your knowledge, which encompasses all things,
وَّ بِنُوْرِ وَجْھِكَ الَّذِیْ اَضَاۤءَلَہٗ كُلُّ شَیْءٍ،
and by the light of Your Face, through which all things are illumined!
یَا نُوْرُ یَا قُدُّوْسُ،
O Light! O All-holy!
یَا اَوَّلَ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ
O First of those who are first
وَ یَا اۤخِرَ الْاۤخِرِیْنَ.
and Last of those who are last!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تَھْتِكُ الْعِصَمَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins which tear apart safeguards!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْلِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تُنْزِلُ النِّقَمَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins which draw down adversities!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تُغَیِّرُ النِّعَمَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins which alter blessings!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تَحْبِسُ الدُّعَاۤءَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins, which hold back supplication!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تَقْطَعُ الرَّجَاۤءَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins, which cut down hopes!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِیْ تُنْزِلُ الْبَلَاۤءَ.
O Allah, forgive me those sins which draw down tribulation!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِیْ كُلَّ ذَنْبٍ اَذْنَبْتُہٗ،
O Allah, forgive me every sin I have committed
وَ كُلُّ خَطِۤیْئَۃٍ اَخْطَاْتھَا.
and every mistake I have made!
اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَیْكَ بِذِكْرِكَ،
O Allah, verily I seek nearness to You through remembrance of You,
وَ اَسْتَشْفِعُ بِكَ اِلٰی نَفْسِكَ،
I seek intercession from You with Yourself,
وَ اَسْئَلُكَ بِجُوْدِكَ، اَنْ تُدْنِیَنِیْ مِنْ قُرْبِكَ،
and I ask You in the name of Your munificence to bring me near to Your proximity,
وَ اَنْ تُوْزِعَنِیْ شُكْرَكَ،
to provide me with gratitude toward You,
وَ اَنْ تُلْھِمَنِیْ ذِكْرَكَ.
and to inspire me with Your remembrance.
اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَسْئَلُكَ سُؤَالَ خَاضِعٍ
O Allah, verily I ask You with the asking of a submissive,
مُتَذَلِّلٍ خَاشِعٍ،
abased, and lowly man
اَنْ تُسَامِحَنِیْ وَ تَرْحَمَنِیْ
to show me forbearance, to have mercy on me,
وَ تَجْعَلَنِیْ بِقِسْمِكَ، رَاضِیًا قَانِعًا
and to make me satisfied and content with Your appointment
وَ فِیْ جَمِیْعِ الْاَحْوَالِ مُتَوَاضِعًا.
and humble in every state.
اَللّٰھُمَّ وَ اَسْئَلُكَ سُؤَالَ مَنِ اشْتَدَّتْ فَاقَتُہٗ،
O Allah, I ask You the beseeching of one whose indigence is extreme,
وَ اَنْزَلَ بِكَ عِنْدَ الشَّدَاۤئِدِ حَاجَتَہٗ،
who has stated to You in difficulties his need,
وَ عَظُمَ فِیْمَا عِنْدَكَ رَغْبَتُہٗ.
and whose desire for what is with You has become great.
اَللّٰھُمَّ عَظُمَ سُلْطَانُكَ،
O Allah, Your authority is tremendous,
وَ عَلٰی مَكَانُكَ،
Your place is lofty,
وَ خَفِیَ مَكْرُكَ،
Your plan is hidden,
وَ ظَھَرَ اَمْرُكَ،
Your command is manifest,
وَ غَلَبَ قَھْرُكَ،
Your domination is overwhelming,
وَ جَرَتْ قُدْرَتُكَ،
Your power is unhindered
وَ لَا یُمْكِنُ الْفِرَارُ مِنْ حُكُوْمَتِكَ.
and escape from Your governance is impossible.
اَللّٰھُمَّ لَا اَجِدُ لِذُنُوْبِیْ غَافِرًا،
O Allah, I find no forgiver of my sins,
وَ لَا لِقَبَاۤئِحِیْ سَاتِرًا،
nor concealer of my ugly acts,
وَّ لَا لِشَیْئٍ مِّنْ عَمَلِیَ الْقَبِیْحِ بِالْحَسَنِ مُبَدِّلًا غَیْرَكَ،
nor transformer of any of my ugly acts into good acts but You.
لَا اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
There is no god but You!
سُبْحَانَكَ وَ بِحَمْدِكَ،
Glory be to You, and Yours is the praise!
ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِیْ
I have wronged myself,
وَ تَجَرَّاْتُ بِجَھْلِیْ،
been audacious in my ignorance,
وَ سَكَنْتُ اِلٰی قَدِیْمِ ذِكْرِكَ لِیْ وَمَنِّكَ عَلَیَّ.
and depended upon Your eternal good turn to me and Your favor toward me.
اَللّٰھُمَّ مَوْلَایَ،
O Allah! O my Protector!
كَمْ مِنْ قَبِیْحٍ سَتَرْتَہٗ،
Too many are the ugly things You have concealed!
وَ كَمْ مِنْ فَادِحٍ مِنَ الْبَلَاۤءِ اَقَلْتَہٗ،
Too many are the burdensome tribulations You have abolished!
وَكَمْ مِنْ عِثَارٍ وَقَیْتَہٗ،
Too many are the stumbles You have prevented!
وَ كَمْ مِّنْ مَّكْرُوْہٍ دَفَعْتَہٗ،
Too many are the ordeals You have repelled!
وَ كَمْ مِنْ ثَنَاۤءٍ جَمِیْلٍ لَسْتُ اَھْلًا لَہٗ نَشَرْتَہٗ.
Too much is the beautiful praise, of which I was unworthy, You have spread abroad!
اَللّٰھُمَّ عَظُمَ بَلَاۤئـِیْ،
O Allah, my tribulation is tremendous,
وَ اَفْرَطَ بِیْ سُوْۤء حَالِیْ،
my bad state is excessive,
وَ قَصُرَتْ بِیْ اَعْمَالِیْ،
my acts are inadequate,
وَ قَعَدَتْ بِیْ اَغْلَالِیْ،
my fetters have tied me down,
وَ حَبَسَنِیْ عَنْ نَفْعِیْ بُعْدُ اَمَلِیْ،
my far-fetched hopes have held me back from my gain,
وَ خَدَعَتْنِیْ الدُّنْیَا بِغُرُوْرِھَا،
this world has seduced me with its delusions,
وَ نَفْسِیْ بِجِنَایَتِھَا وَ مِطَالِیْ
and my own soul and delay with its offences.
یَا سَیِّدِیْ فَاَسْئَلُكَ بِعِزَّتِكَ
O my Master! So, I ask You by Your might
اَنْ لَّا یَحْجُبَ عَنْكَ دُعَاۤئـِیْ
not to let my evil works and acts
سُوْۤءُ عَمَلِیْ وَ فِعَالِیْ,
veil my supplication from You,
وَ لَا تَفْضَحْنِیْ بِخَفِیِّ مَا اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَیْہِ مِنْ سِرِّیْ,
not to disgrace me through the hidden things You know of my secrets,
وَ لَا تُعَاجِلْنِیْ بِالْعُقُوْبَۃِ عَلٰی مَا عَمِلْتُہٗ فِیْ خَلَوَاتِیْ،
not to hasten punishment to me for what I have done in private,
مِنْ سُوْۤءِ فِعْلِیْ وَ اِسَاۤئَتِیْ،
such as my evil acts in secrecy and my misdeeds,
وَ دَوَامِ تَفْرِیْطِیْ وَ جَھَالَتِیْ،
my continuous negligence, my ignorance,
وَ كَثْرَۃِ شَھْوَاتِیْ وَ غَفْلَتِیْ،
my manifold passions, and my forgetfulness.
وَ كُنِ اللّٰھُمَّ بِعِزَّتِكَ لِیْ
By Your might, O Allah,
فِیْ كُلِّ الْاَحْوَالِ رَؤُوْفًا،
be kind to me in all states,
وَ عَلَیَّ فِیْ جَمِیْعِ الْاُمُوْرِ عَطُوْفًا.
and be gracious to me in all affairs!
اِلٰھِیْ وَ رَبِّیْ مَنْ لِیْ غَیْرُكَ،
My God and Lord! Whom do I have save You
اَسْئَلُہٗ كَشْفَ ضُرِّیْ،
from whom to ask removal of my affliction
وَ النَّظَرَ فِیْ اَمْرِیْ.
and regard for my affairs!
اِلٰھِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ،
My God and Protector!
اَجْرَیْتَ عَلَیَّ حُكْمًانِ
You put into effect through me a decree
اتَّبَعْتُ فِیْہِ ھَوٰی نَفْسِیْ،
in which I followed the caprice of my own soul
وَ لَمْ اَحْتَرِسْ فِیْہِ مِنْ تَزْیِیْنِ عَدُوِّیْ،
and I did not remain wary of adorning my enemy.
فَغَرَّنِیْ بِمَا اَھْوٰی
So, he deluded me through my soul's caprice
وَ اَسْعَدَہٗ عَلٰی ذٰلِكَ الْقَضَاۤءُ،
and therein destiny favored him.
فَتَجَاوَزْتُ بِمَا جَرٰی عَلَیَّ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ بَعْضَ حُدُوْدِكَ،
So, in what was put into effect through me in that situation, I transgressed some of Your statutes
وَ خَالَفْتُ بَعْضَ اَوَامِرِكَ،
and disobeyed some of Your commands.
فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَیَّ فِیْ جَمِیْعِ ذٰلِكَ،
So, Yours is the argument against me in all of that
وَ لَا حُجَّۃَ لِیْ فِیْمَا جَرٰی عَلَیَّ فِیْہِ قَضَاۤؤُكَ،
and I have no argument in what Your destiny put into effect through me therein
وَاَلْزَمَنِیْ حُكْمُكَ وَ بَلَاۤؤُكَ،
nor in what Your decree and Your test imposed upon me.
وَ قَدْ اَتَیْتُكَ یَا اِلٰھِیْ
Now, I have come to You, My God,
بَعْدَ تَقْصِیْرِیْ وَ اِسْرَافِیْ عَلٰی نَفْسِیْ،
after my shortcoming and immoderation toward myself,
مُعْتَذِرًا نَادِمًا،
proffering my excuse, regretful,
مُنْكَسِرًا مُسْتَقِیْلًا
broken, apologizing,
مُسْتَغْفِرًا مُنِیْبًا،
asking forgiveness, repenting,
مُقِرًّا مُذْعِنًا مُعْتَرِفًا،
acknowledging, submissive, and confessing.
لَا اَجِدُ مَفَرًّا مِمَّا كَانَ مِنِّیْ،
I find no place to flee from what I have shown
وَ لَا مَفْزَعًا اَتَوَجَّہُ اِلَیْہِ فِیْ اَمْرِیْ
nor any place of escape to which I may turn in my affairs
غَیْرَ قَبُوْلِكَ عُذْرِیْ،
other than Your acceptance of my excuse
وَ اِدْخَالِكَ اِیَّایَ فِیْ سَعَۃِ رَحْمَتِكَ.
and Your entering me into the compass of Your mercy.
اَللّٰھُمَّ فَاقْبَلْ عُذْرِیْ،
O Allah, so accept my excuse,
وَارْحَمْ شِدَّۃَ ضُرِّیْ،
have mercy upon the severity of my affliction,
وَ فُكَّنِیْ مِنْ شَدِّ وَثَاقِیْ.
and release me from the tightness of my fetters.
یَا رَبِّ ارْحَمْ ضَعْفَ بَدَنِیْ،
My Lord, have mercy upon the weakness of my body,
وَ رِقَّۃَ جِلْدِیْ،
the thinness of my skin,
وَ دِقَّۃَ عَظْمِیْ.
and the frailty of my bones.
یَا مَنْ بَدَءَخَلْقِیْ وَ ذِكْرِیْ،
O You Who gave rise to my creation, to the remembrance of me,
وَ تَرْبِیَتِیْ وَ بِرِّیْ وَ تَغْذِیَتِیْ،
to the nurture of me, to goodness toward me, and to nourishment on me!
ھَبْنِیْ لِاِبْتِدَاۤءِ كَرَمِكَ
(please) Bestow upon me for the sake of Your having given rise [to me] with generosity
وَ سَالِفِ بِرِّكَ بِیْ.
and Your previous goodness to me!
یَا اِلٰھِیْ وَ سَیِّدِیْ وَ رَبِّیْ،
O my God, Master and Lord!
اَ تُرَاكَ مُعَذِّبِیْ بِنَارِكَ بَعْدَ تَوْحِیْدِكَ
Will You torment me with Your fire after I have professed Your Unity,
وَ بَعْدَ مَا انْطَوٰی عَلَیْہِ قَلْبِیْ مِنْ مَعْرِفَتِكَ
and after the knowledge of You my heart has embraced,
وَ لَھِجَ بِہٖ لِسَانِیْ مِنْ ذِكْرِكَ
the remembrance of You my tongue has constantly mentioned,
وَاعْتَقَدَہٗ ضَمِیْرِیْ مِنْ حُبِّكَ
the love of You to which my mind has clung,
وَ بَعْدَ صِدْقِ اعْتِرَافِیْ وَ دُعَاۤئِـیْ
and the sincerity of my confession and my supplication,
خَاضِعًا لِرُبُوْبِیَّتِكَ
humble before Your lordship?
ھَیْھَاتَ
Far be it from You!
اَنْتَ اَكْرَمُ مِنْ اَنْ تُضَیِّعَ مَنْ رَبَّیْتَہٗ،
You are too generous to squander him whom You have nurtured,
اَوْ تُبْعِدَ مَنْ اَدْنَیْتَہٗ،
banish him whom You have brought nigh,
اَو ْتُشَرِّدَ مَنْ اٰوَیْتَہٗ،
drive away him whom You have given an abode,
اَوْ تُسَلِّمَ اِلَی الْبَلۤاۤءِ مَنْ كَفَیْتَہٗ وَ رَحِمْتَہٗ،
or submit to tribulation him whom You have saved and shown mercy.
وَ لَیْتَ شِعْرِیْ یَا سَیِّدِیْ وَ اِلٰھِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ.
Would that I knew, my Master, God and Protector,
اَتُسَلِّطُ النَّارَ عَلٰی وُجُوْہٍ
will You give the Fire dominion over faces
خَرَّتْ لِعَظَمَتِكَ سَاجِدَۃً
fallen down prostrate before Your Tremendousness,
وَ عَلٰی اَلْسُنٍ نَطَقَتْ بِتَوْحِیْدِكَ صَادِقَۃً
over tongues voicing sincerely the profession of Your Unity
وَ بِشُكْرِكَ مَادِحَۃً
and giving thanks to You in praise,
وَ عَلٰی قُلُوْبٍ اِعْتَرَفَتْ بِاِلٰھِیَّتِكَ مُحَقِّقَۃً
over hearts acknowledging Your Divinity through verification,
وَ عَلٰی ضَمَاۤئِرَ حَوَتْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ بِكَ
over minds encompassing knowledge of You
حَتّٰی صَارَتْ خَاشِعَۃً
until they have become humble,
وَ عَلٰی جَوَارِحَ سَعَتْ اِلٰی اَوْطَانِ تَعَبُّدِكَ طَاۤئِعَۃً
over organs speeding to the places of Your worship in obedience
وَ اَشَارَتْ بِاسْتِغْفَارِكَ مُذْعِنَۃً
and beckoning for Your forgiveness in submission?
مَا ھٰكَذَا الظَّنُّ بِكَ،
No such opinion is held of You
وَ لَا اُخْبِرْنَا بِفَضْلِكَ عَنْكَ
nor has such been reported - thanks to. Your bounty concerning You.
یَا كَرِیْمُ یَا رَبِّ
O All-generous! My Lord,
وَ اَنْتَ تَعْلَمُ ضَعْفِیْ عَنْ قَلِیْلٍ مِّنْ بَلَاۤءِ الدُّنْیَا وَ عُقُوْبَاتِھَا،
and You know my weakness before a little of this world's tribulations and punishments,
وَ مَا یَجْرِیْ فِیْھَا مِنَ الْمَكَارِہِ عَلٰی اَھْلِھَا،
and before those ordeals which befall its inhabitants,
عَلٰی اَنَّ ذٰلِكَ بَلَاۤءٌ وَّ مَكْرُوْہٌ
even though it is a tribulation and ordeal
قَلِیْلٌ مَكْثُہٗ،
whose stay is short,
یَسِیْرٌ بَقَاۤئُہٗ،
subsistence is little,
قَصِیْرٌ مُدَّتُہٗ،
and period is fleeting.
فَكَیْفَ احْتِمَالِیْ لِبَلَاۤءِ الْاٰخِرَۃِ،
How can I then endure the tribulations of the next world
وَ جَلِیْلِ وُقُوْعِ الْمَكَارِہِ فِیْھَا،
and the great ordeals that occur within it?
وَ ھُوَ بَلَاۤءٌ تَطُوْلُ مُدَّتُہٗ،
It is a tribulation whose period is long,
وَ یَدُوْمُ مَقَامُہٗ،
station endures,
وَ لَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنْ اَھْلِہٖ،
and sufferers are given no respite,
لِاَنَّہٗ لَا یَكُوْنُ اِلَّا عَنْ غَضَبِكَ
since it only occurs as a result of Your wrath,
وَ انْتِقَامِكَ وَ سَخَطِكَ،
vengeance, and anger,
وَ ھٰذَا مَا لَا تَقُوْمُ لَہُ السَّمٰوَاتُ وَ الْاَرْضُ.
which cannot be withstood by the heavens and the earth.
یَا سَیِّدِیْ فَكَیْفَ لِیْ
O Master, so what about me?
وَ اَنَا عَبْدُكَ الضَّعِیْفُ الذَّلِیْلُ
For I am Your weak, lowly,
الْحَقِیْرُ الْمِسْكِیْنُ الْمُسْتَكِیْنُ،
base, wretched, and miserable slave.
یَا اِلٰھِیْ وَ رَبِّیْ وَ سَیِّدِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ.
My God! My Lord! My Master! My Protector!
لِاَیِّ الْاُمُوْرِ اِلَیْكَ اَشْكُوْ
For which things would I complain to You?
وَ لِمَا مِنْھَا اَضِجُّ وَ اَبْكِیْ
For which of them would I lament and weep?
لِاَلِیْمِ الْعَذَابِ وَ شِدَّتِہٖ
For the pain and severity of chastisement?
اَمْ لِطُوْلِ الْبَلَاۤءِ وَ مُدَّتِہٖ
Or for the length and period of tribulation?
فَلَئِنْ صَیَّرْتَنِیْ لِلْعُقُوْبَاتِ مَعَ اَعْدَاۤئِكَ،
So, if You take me to the punishments with Your enemies,
وَ جَمَعْتَ بَیْنِیْ وَ بَیْنَ اَھْلِ بَلَاۤئِكَ،
gather me with the people of Your tribulation,
وَ فَرَّقْتَ بَیْنِیْ وَ بَیْنَ اَحِبَّاۤئِكَ وَ اَوْلِیَاۤئِكَ،
and separate me from Your friends and saints,
فَھَبْنِیْ یَا اِلٰھِیْ وَ سَیِّدِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ وَ رَبِّیْ.
then suppose—My God, Master, Protector, and Lord—
صَبَرْتُ عَلٰی عَذَابِكَ،
that I am able to endure Your chastisement,
فَكَیْفَ اَصْبِرُ عَلٰی فِرَاقِكَ
how can I endure separation from You?
وَ ھَبْنِیْ صَبَرْتُ عَلٰی حَرِّ نَارِكَ،
Suppose that I am able to endure the heat of Your fire,
فَكَیْفَ اَصْبِرُ عَنِ النَّظَرِ اِلٰی كَرَامَتِكَ
how can I endure not gazing upon Your generosity?
اَمْ كَیْفَ اَسْكُنُ فِیْ النَّارِ وَ رَجَاۤئـِیْ عَفْوُكَ
How can I dwell in the Fire while my hope is Your pardon?
فَبِعِزَّتِكَ یَا سَیِّدِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ اُقْسِمُ صَادِقًا
So by Your might, my Master and protector, I swear sincerely,
لَئِنْ تَرَكْتَنِیْ نَاطِقًا،
if You leave me with speech,
لَاَضِجَّنَّ اِلَیْكَ بَیْنَ اَھْلِھَا ضَجِیْجَ الْاٰمِلِیْنَ،
I will lament to You from the midst of the Fire's inhabitants with lamentation of the hopeful,
وَ لَاَصْرُخَنَّ اِلَیْكَ صُرَاخَ الْمُسْتَصْرِخِیْنَ،
I will cry to You with the cry of those crying for help,
وَ لَاَبْكِیَنَّ عَلَیْكَ بُكَاۤءَالْفَاقِدِیْنَ،
I will weep to You with the weeping of the bereft,
وَ لَاُنَادِیَنَّكَ اَیْنَ كُنْتَ یَا وَلِیَّ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ
and I will call to You: Where are You, O Sponsor of the believers,
یَا غَایَۃَ اٰمَالِ الْعَارِفِیْنَ
O Goal of the hopes of Your knowers,
یَا غِیَاثَ الْمُسْتَغِیْثِیْنَ
O Aide of those who seek assistance,
یَا حَبِیْبَ قُلُوْبِ الصَّادِقِیْنَ
O Friend of the hearts of the sincere,
وَ یَا اِلٰہَ الْعَالَمِیْنَ
O God of all the world's inhabitants!
اَفَتُرَاكَ سُبْحَانَكَ یَا اِلٰھِیْ وَ بِحَمْدِكَ،
Will You— Glory be to You, My God, and Yours is the praised —
تَسْمَعُ فِیْھَا صَوْتَ عَبْدٍ مُّسْلِمٍ،
hear therein the voice of a slave surrendered to You,
سُجِنَ فِیْھَا بِمُخَالَفَتِہٖ،
imprisoned there because of his violations,
وَ ذَاقَ طَعْمَ عَذَابِھَا بِمَعْصِیَتِہٖ،
tasting the favor of its torment because of his disobedience,
وَ حُبِسَ بَیْنَ اَطْبَاقِھَا بِجُرْمِہٖ وَ جَرِیْرَتِہٖ
and confined within its layers because of his sin and crime,
وَ ھُوَ یَضِجُّ اِلَیْكَ ضَجِیْجَ مُؤَمِّلٍ لِرَحْمَتِكَ،
while he laments to You with the lament of one hopeful for Your mercy,
وَ یُنَادِیْكَ بِلِسَانِ اَھْلِ تَوْحِیْدِكَ،
calls to You with the tongue of those who profess Your Unity,
وَ یَتَوَسَّلُ اِلَیْكَ بِرُبُوْبِیَّتِكَ.
and entreats You by Your lordship!
یَا مَوْلَایَ، فَكَیْفَ یَبْقٰی فِی الْعَذَابِ
My Protector, so how should he remain in the chastisement
وَ ھُوَ یَرْجُوْ مَا سَلَفَ مِنْ حِلْمِكَ
while he has hope for Your previous clemency?
اَمْ كَیْفَ تُؤْلِمُہُ النَّارُ
How should the Fire cause him pain
وَ ھُوَ یَاْمُلُ فَضْلَكَ وَ رَحْمَتَكَ.
while he expects Your bounty and mercy?
اَمْ كَیْفَ یُحْرِقُہٗ لَھِیْبُھَا
How should its flames burn him
وَ اَنْتَ تَسْمَعُ صَوْتَہٗ وَ تَرٰی مَكَانَہٗ.
while You hear his voice and see his place?
اَمْ كَیْفَ یَشْتَمِلُ عَلَیْہِ زَفِیْرُھَا
How should its groaning encompass him
وَ اَنْتَ تَعْلَمُ ضَعْفَہٗ.
while You know his weakness?
اَمْ كَیْفَ یَتَقَلْقَلُ بَیْنَ اَطْبَاقِھَا
How should he be convulsed among its levels
وَ اَنْتَ تَعْلَمُ صِدْقَہٗ.
while You know his sincerity?
اَمْ كَیْفَ تَزْجُرُہٗ زَبَانِیَّتُھَا
How should its keepers torture him
وَ ھُوَ یُنَادِیْكَ یَا رَبَّہُ
while he calls out to You, O Lord?
اَمْ كَیْفَ یَرْجُوْ فَضْلَكَ فِیْ عِتْقِہٖ مِنْھَا
How should he have hope for Your bounty in freeing him from it
فَتَتْرُكْہٗ فِیْھَا.
while You abandon him therein?
ھَیْھَاتَ مَا ذٰلِكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ،
Far be it from You[ That is not what is expected from You
وَ لَا الْمَعْرُوْفُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ،
nor what is well-known of Your bounty,
وَ لَا مُشْبِہٌ لِمَا عَامَلْتَ بِہِ الْمُوَحِّدِیْنَ
nor is it similar to the goodness and kindness
مِنْ بِرِّكَ وَ اِحْسَانِكَ.
You have shown to those who profess Your Unity.
فَبِالْیَقِیْنِ اَقْطَعُ
So I declare with certainty
لَوْلَا مَا حَكَمْتَ بِہٖ مِنْ تَعْذِیْبِ جَاحِدِیْكَ،
that were it not for what You have decreed concerning the chastisement of Your deniers
وَ قَضَیْتَ بِہٖ مِنْ اِخْلَادِ مُعَانِدِیْكَ،
and what You have foreordained concerning the everlasting home of those who stubbornly resist,
لَجَعَلْتَ النَّارَ كُلَّھَا بَرْدًا وَّ سَلَامًا،
You would make the Fire, entirely, coolness and safety,
وَ مَا كَانَ لِاَحَدٍ فِیْھَا مَقَرًّا وَّ لَا مُقَامًا،
and no one would have a place of rest or abode within it.
لٰكِنَّكَ تَقَدَّسَتْ اَسْمَاۤؤُكَ
But You—holy are Your Names
اَقْسَمْتَ اَنْ تَمْلَاَھَا مِنَ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ
have sworn that You will fill it with the unbelievers,
مِنَ الْجِنَّۃِ وَ النَّاسِ اَجْمَعِیْنَ،
both jinn and men together,
وَ اَنْ تُخَلِّدَ فِیْھَا الْمُعَانِدِیْنَ،
and place those who stubbornly resist therein forever.
وَ اَنْتَ جَلَّ ثَنَاۤؤُكَ قُلْتَ مُبْتَدِءًا،
Moreover, You— majestic is Your eulogy— said at the beginning
وَ تَطَوَّلْتَ بِالْاِنْعَامِ مُتَكَرِّمًا،
and were gracious through kindness as a favor:
اَفَمَنْ كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا كَمَنْ كَانَ فَاسِقًا لَا یَسْتَوُوْنَ.
“What? Is he who has been believer like him who has been ungodly? They are not equal.”
اِلٰھِیْ وَ سَیِّدِیْ،
My God and Master!
فَاَسْئَلُكَ بِالْقُدْرَۃِ الَّتِیْ قَدَّرْتَھَا،
So I ask You by the power You have apportioned,
وَ بِالْقَضِیَّۃِ الَّتِیْ حَتَمْتَھَا وَ حَكَمْتَھَا،
the decision You have determined and imposed
وَ غَلَبْتَ مَنْ عَلَیْہِ اَجْرَیْتَھَا،
and through which You have overcome him toward whom it has been put into effect,
اَنْ تَھَبَ لِیْ فِیْ ھٰذِہِ اللَّیْلَۃِ
that You forgive me in this night
وَ فِیْ ھٰذِہِ السَّاعَۃِ،
and at this hour
كُلَّ جُرْمٍ اَجْرَمْتُہٗ،
every offence I have committed,
وَ كُلَّ ذَنْبٍ اَذْنَبْتُہٗ،
every sin I have performed,
وَ كُلَّ قَبِیْحٍ اَسْرَرْتُہٗ،
every ugly thing I have concealed,
وَ كُلَّ جَھْلٍ عَمِلْتُہٗ،
and every folly I have enacted
كَتَمْتُہٗ اَوْ اَعْلَنْتُہٗ،
whether I have hidden, announced,
اَخْفَیْتُہٗ اَوْ اَظْھَرْتُہٗ،
concealed, or manifested it,
وَ كُلَّ سَیِّئَۃٍ اَمَرْتَ بِاِثْبَاتِھَا الْكِرَامَ الْكَاتِبِیْنَ،
every evil, act which You have commanded the Noble Writers to record,
الَّذِیْنَ وَكَّلْتَھُمْ بِحِفْظِ مَا یَكُوْنُ مِنِّیْ،
those whom You have appointed to watch over what appears from me,
وَ جَعَلْتَھُمْ شُھُوْدًا عَلَیَّ مَعَ جَوَارِحِیْ،
whom You have made, along with my organs, witness against me,
وَ كُنْتَ اَنْتَ الرَّقِیْبَ عَلَیَّ مِنْ وَّرَاۤئِھِمْ
and You were the Watcher over me from behind them
وَالشَّاھِدَ لِمَا خَفِیَ عَنْھُمْ،
and the Witness of what is hidden from them,
وَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ اَخْفَیْتَہٗ،
but through Your mercy You concealed it,
وَ بِفَضْلِكَ سَتَرْتَہٗ،
and through Your bounty You veiled it,
وَ اَنْ تُوَفِّرَ حَظِّیْ مِنْ كُلِّ خَیْرٍ اَنْزَلْتَہٗ،
bestow upon me an abundant share of every good You send down,
اَوْ اِحْسَانٍ فَضَّلْتَہٗ،
kindness You confer,
اَوْ بِرٍّ نَشَرْتَہٗ،
goodness You unfold,
اَوْ رِزْقٍ بَسَطْتَہٗ،
provision You spread out,
اَوْ ذَنْبٍ تَغْفِرُہٗ،
sin You forgive,
اَوْخَطَاۤءٍ تَسْتُرُہٗ.
or error You cover.
یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ،
My Lord! My Lord! My Lord!
یَا اِلٰھِیْ وَ سَیِّدِیْ وَ مَوْلَایَ وَمَالِكَ رِقِّی،ْ
My God! My Master! My Protector! Owner of my bondage!
یَا مَنْ بِیَدِہٖ نَاصِیَتِیْ،
O He in Whose hand is my forelock!
یَا عَلِیْمًا بِضُرِّیْ وَ مَسْكَنَتِیْ،
O He Who knows my affliction and my misery!
یَا خَبِیْرًا بِفَقْرِیْ وَ فَاقَتِیْ.
O He Who is aware of my poverty and indigence!
یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ،
My Lord! My Lord! My Lord!
اَسْئَلُكَ بِحَقِّكَ وَ قُدْسِكَ
I beseech You in the name of Your Truth, Holiness,
وَ اَعْظَمِ صِفَاتِكَ وَ اَسْمَاۤئِكَ،
and the greatest of Your Attributes and Names,
اَنْ تَجْعَلَ اَوْقَاتِیْ مِنَ اللَّیْلِ وَ النَّھَارِ،
to make my times in the night and the day
بِذِكْرِكَ مَعْمُوْرَۃً،
inhabited by Your remembrance,
وَ بِخِدْمَتِكَ مَوْصُوْلَۃً،
and joined to Your service,
وَ اَعْمَالِیْ عِنْدَكَ مَقْبُوْلَۃً،
and to make my works acceptable to You,
حَتّٰی تَكُوْنَ اَعْمَالِیْ وَ اَوْرَادِیْ كُلّھَا وِرْدًا وَّاحِدًا،
so that my works and litanies may all be a single litany,
وَ حَالِیْ فِیْ خِدْمَتِكَ سَرْمَدًا.
and my occupation with Your service everlasting.
یَا سَیِّدِیْ، یَا مَنْ عَلَیْہِ مُعَوَّلِیْ،
My Master! O He upon Whom I depend!
یَا مَنْ اِلَیْہِ شَكَوْتُ اَحْوَالِیْ.
O He to Whom I complain about my states!
یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ یَا رَبِّ،
My Lord! My Lord! My Lord!
قَوِّ عَلٰی خِدْمَتِكَ جَوَارِحِیْ،
Strengthen my organs in Your service,
وَ اشْدُدْ عَلَی الْعَزِیْمَۃِ جَوَانِحِیْ،
fortify my ribs in determination,
وَ ھَبْ لِیَ الْجِدَّ فِیْ خَشْیَتِكَ،
bestow upon me earnestness in my fear of You
وَالدَّوٰمَ فِی الْاِتِّصَالِ بِخِدْمَتِكَ،
and continuity in my being joined to Your service
حَتّٰی اَسْرَحَ اِلَیْكَ فِیْ مَیَادِیْنِ السَّابِقِیْنَ،
so that I may move easily toward You in the fields of the foremost,
وَ اُسْرِعَ اِلَیْكَ فِی الْبَارِزِیْنَ،
hurry to You among the prominent,
وَاشْتَاقَ اِلٰی قُرْبِكَ فِی الْمُشْتَاقِیْنَ،
desire fervently Your proximity among the fervently desirous,
وَ اَدْنُوَ مِنْكَ دُنُوَّ الْمُخْلِصِیْنَ،
move nearer to You with the nearness of the sincere,
وَ اَخَافَكَ مَخَافَۃَ الْمُوْقِنِیْنَ،
fear You with the fear of those who have certitude,
وَ اجْتَمِعَ فِیْ جَوَارِكَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ.
and gather with the believers in Your vicinity.
اَللّٰھُمَّ وَ مَنْ اَرَادَ نِیْ بِسُوْۤءٍ فَاَرِدْہُ،
O Allah, whoever desires evil for me, desire [it] for him!
وَ مَنْ كَادَنِیْ فَكِدْہُ،
Whoever deceives me, deceive him!
وَاجْعَلْنِیْ مِنْ اَحْسَنِ عَبِیْدِكَ نَصِیْبًا عِنْدَكَ،
Make me one of Your most excellent slaves in portion in Your decree,
وَ اَقْرَبِھِمْ مَنْزِلَۃً مِّنْكَ،
the nearest of them in station to You,
وَ اَخَصِّھِمْ زُلْفَۃً لَدَیْكَ،
and the most elected in proximity to You,
فَاِنَّہٗ لَا یُنَالُ ذٰلِكَ اِلَّا بِفَضْلِكَ،
for that cannot be attained except by Your bounty.
وَ جُدْ لِیْ بِجُوْدِكَ،
Grant generously to me through Your munificence,
وَ اعْطِفْ عَلَیَّ بِمَجْدِكَ،
incline toward me with Your splendor,
وَاحْفَظْنِیْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ،
protect me with Your mercy,
وَاجْعَلْ لِسَانِیْ بِذِكْرِكَ لَھِجًا،
make my tongue remember You without ceasing
وَ قَلْبِیْ بِحُبِّكَ مُتَیَّمًا،
and my heart enthralled by Your love,
وَ مُنَّ عَلَیَّ بِحُسْنِ اِجَابَتِكَ،
be gracious to me by answering me favorably,
وَ اَقِلْنِیْ عَثْرَتِیْ،
nullify my slips,
وَاغْفِرْ زَلَّتِیْ،
and forgive my lapses!
فَاِنَّكَ قَضَیْتَ عَلٰی عِبَادِكَ بِعِبَادَتِكَ،
For You have decreed Your worship for Your servants,
وَ اَمَرْتَھُمْ بِدُعَاۤئِكَ،
commanded them to supplicate You,
وَ ضَمِنْتَ لَھُمُ الْاِجَابَۃَ،
and assured them that they would be answered.
فَاِلَیْكَ یَارَبِّ نَصَبْتُ وَجْھِیْ،
So, toward You, my Lord, I have turned my face,
وَ اِلَیْكَ یَا رَبِّ مَدَدْتُ یَدِیْ،
and toward You, my Lord, I have extended my hand.
فَبِعِزَّتِكَ اسْتَجِبْ لِیْ دُعَاۤئـِیْ،
So, in the name of Your might, respond to my supplication,
وَ بَلِّغْنِیْ مُنَایَ
make me attain my desires,
وَ لَا تَقْطَعْ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ رَجَاۤئـِیْ،
do not severe my hoping for Your favours
وَاكْفِنِیْ شَرَّ الْجِنِّ وَ الْاِنْسِ مِنْ اَعْدَاۤئـِیْ،
and spare me the evil of my enemies from among jinn and men!
یَا سَرِیْعَ الرِّضَا،
O He, whose pleasure is quickly achieved!
اِغْفِرْ لِمَنْ لَا یَمْلِكُ اِلَّا الدُّعَاۤءَ،
Forgive him who owns nothing but supplication
فَاِنَّكَ فَعَّالٌ لِمَا تَشَاۤءُ،
For You do what you will.
یَا مَنِ اسْمُہٗ دَوَاۤءٌ،
O He whose Name is a remedy,
وَّ ذِكْرُہٗ شِفَاۤءٌ،
Whose remembrance is a cure,
وَ طَاعَتُہٗ غِنًی،
And whose obedience is wealth!
اِرْحَمْ مَنْ رَاْسُ مَالِہِ الرَّجَاۤءُ،
Have mercy upon him whose capital is hope
وَ سِلَاحُہُ الْبُكَاۤءُ،
And whose weapon is tears!
یَا سَابِغَ النِّعَمِ،
O Ample in blessings!
یَا دَافِعَ النِّقَمِ،
O Repeller of adversities!
یَا نُوْرَ الْمُسْتَوْحِشِیْنَ فِی الظُّلَمِ،
O Light of those who are lonely in the darkness!
یَا عَالِمًا لَا یُعَلَّمُ،
O Knower who was never taught!
صَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَّ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،
Bless Muhammad and Muhammad's household!
وَافْعَلْ بِیْ مَا اَنْتَ اَھْلُہٗ،
And do with me what is worthy of You!
وَ صَلَّی اﷲُ عَلٰی رَسُوْلِہٖ
May Allah bless His messenger
وَالْاَئِمَّۃِ الْمَیَامِیْنَ مِنْ اٰلِہٖ،
and the holy Imams of his household
وَ سَلَّمَ تَسْلِیْمًا كَثِیْرًا۔
And give them abundant peace!
