DUA BEFORE AND AFTER RITUAL PRAYERS
Five in number, these supplicatory prayers are as follows:
First: Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) is reported to have said: Imam ‘Ali Amir al-Mu’minin (‘a) used to say: Whoever says these words, will be added to the group of Muhammad and his Household:
Before commencing a ritual prayer, the following supplicatory prayer may be said:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَتَوَجَّهُ اِلَيْكَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ وَّ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O Allah, I turn my face towards You in the name of Muhammad and Muhammad’s Household,
وَّ اُقَدِّمُهُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَىْ صَلَوَاتِىْ
present them before You before I begin my prayers,
وَ اَتَقَرَّبُ بِهِمْ اِلَيْكَ
and seek nearness to You in their names.
فَاجْعَلْنِىْ بِهِمْ وَجِيْهًا
So, in their names, (please) make me of high regard with You
فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ
in this world and the Hereafter
وَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِيْنَ
and of those drawn near to You.
مَنَنْتَ عَلَىَّ بِمَعْرِفَتِهِمْ
You have endued me with the great favor of making me know them;
فَاخْتِمْ لِىْ بِطَاعَتِهِمْ
so, (please) seal my life with obedience to them,
وَ مَعْرِفَتِهِمْ وَ وِلَايَتِهِمْ
recognition of them, and loyalty to them,
فَاِنَّهَا السَّعَادَةُ
because this is the true happiness.
وَ اخْتِمْ لِىْ بِهَا
Therefore, (please) seal my life with these things,
فَاِنَّكَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْئٍ قَدِيْرٌ۔
for You have power over all things.
Before commencing a ritual prayer, the following supplicatory prayer may be said:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِىْ مَعَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O Allah, (please) make me with Muhammad and Muhammad’s Household
فِىْ كُلِّ عَافِيَةٍ وَ بَلَّاۤءٍ
in every item of wellbeing and tribulation
وَاجْعَلْنِىْ مَعَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
and make me with Muhammad and Muhammad’s Household
فِىْ كُلِّ مَثْوًى وَ مُنْقَلَبٍ
in every place of returning and place of rest.
اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَحْيَاىَ مَحْيَاهُمْ
O Allah, (please) make me live their lives
وَمَمَاتِىْ مَمَاتَهُمْ
and die their death,
وَاجْعَلْنِىْ مَعَهُمْ فِى الْمَوَاطِنِ كُلِّهَا
include me with them in all situations,
وَلَاتُفَرِّقْ بَيْنِىْ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ
and do not depart me from them.
اِنَّكَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىْ ءٍ قَدِيْرٌ۔
Verily, You have power over all things.
Second: Safwan al-Jammal is reported to have said: I was once with Imam al-Sadiq (‘a). He directed his face towards the kiblah direction (for performing a prayer) and said the following supplicatory prayer before he uttered the takbirah al-ihram statement (i.e. the commencing statement of the ritual prayers):
اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا تُؤْيِسْنِىْ مِنْ رَّوْحِكَ
O Allah, (please) do not make me despair of Your soothing mercy,
وَلَاتُقَنِّطْنِىْ مِنْ رَّحْمَتِكَ
do not make me lose hope of Your mercy,
وَلَا تُؤْمِنِّىْ مَكْرَكَ
and do not make me feel secure against Your plans,
فَاِنَّهُ لَا يَاْمَنُ مَكْرَاللّٰهِ اِلَا الْقَوْمُ الْخَاسِرُوْنَ۔
for none feels secure against Allah’s plans except the losing people.
Third: Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) is reported to have said: Imam ‘Ali Amir al-Mu’minin (‘a) used to say the following supplicatory prayer whenever he accomplished the midday (zohr) (i.e. zohr) prayer:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَيْكَ بِجُوْدِكَ وَ كَرَمِكَ وَ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَيْكَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَ رَسُوْلِكَ وَ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَيْكَ بِمَلَاۤئِكَتِكَ الْمُقَرَّبِيْنَ وَ اَنْبِيَاۤئِكَ الْمُرْسَلِيْنَ وَ بِكَ اللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الْغَنِىُّ عَنِّىْ وَ بِىَ الْفَاقَةُ اِلَيْكَ اَنْتَ الْغَنِىُّ عَنِّىْ وَ اَنَا الْفَقِيْرُ اِلَيْكَ اَقَلْتَنِىْ عَثْرَتِىْ وَ سَتَرْتَ عَلَىَّ ذُ نُوْبِىْ فَاقْضِ الْيَوْمَ حَاجَتِىْ وَ لَا تُعَذِّبْنِىْ بِقَبِيْحِ مَا تَعْلَمُ مِنِّىْ بَلْ عَفْوُكَ وَ جُوْدُكَ يَسَعُنِىْ۔
He would then prostrate himself and say the following supplicatory prayer:
يَا اَهْلَ التَّقْوٰى
O worthy to be feared!
وَ يَا اَهْلَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
O worthy to forgive!
يَا بَرُّ يَا رَحِيْمُ
O All-benign! O All-merciful!
اَنْتَ اَبَرُّبِىْ مِنْ اَبِىْ وَ اُمِّىْ
You are more benign to me than my father, my mother,
وَ مِنْ جَمِيْعِ الْخَلَايِقِ
and all creatures.
اِقْلِبْنِىْ بِقَضَاۤءِ حَاجَتِىْ
(Please) make me return having my request granted (by You),
مُجَابًا دُعَاۤئِىْ
having my prayer responded,
مَرْحُوْمًا صَوْتِىْ
having my voice compassionated,
قَدْ كَشَفْتَ اَنْوَاعَ الْبَلَاۤءِ عَنِّىْ۔
and having all sorts of tribulation held off from me.
Fourth: Imam Muhammad al-Taqi (‘a) is reported to have said: When you accomplish an obligatory prayer, you may say the following supplicatory prayer:
رَضِيْتُ بِاللّٰهِ رَبًّا وَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيًّا وَ بِالْاِسْلَامِ دِيْنًا وَ بِالْقُرْاٰنِ كِتَابًا وَ بِفُلَانٍ وَ فُلَانٍ اَئِمَّةً اَللّٰهُمَّ وَلِيُّكَ فُلَانٌ فَاحْفَظْهُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ وَ عَنْ يَمِيْنِهِ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ وَ مِنْ تَحْتِهِ وَامْدُدُ لَهُ فِىْ عُمْرِهِ وَاجْعَلْهُ الْقَاۤئِمَ بِاَمْرِكَ وَالْمُنْتَصِرَ لِدِيْنِكَ وَ اَرِهِ مَا يُحِبُّ وَ مَا تَقِرُّ بِهِ عَيْنُهُ فِىْ نَفْسِهِ وَ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ وَ فِىْ اَهْلِهِ وَ مَالِهِ وَ فِىْ شِيْعَتِهِ وَ فِىْ عَدُوِّهِ وَ اَرِهِمْ مِنْهُ مَا يَحْذَرُوْنَ وَ اَرِهِ فِيْهِمْ مَّا يُحِبُّ وَ تَقِرُّبِهِ عَيْنُهُ وَاشْفِ صُدُوْرَنا وَ صُدُوْرَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِيْنَ۔
Whenever he accomplished an obligatory prayer, the Holy Prophet (s) would say this supplicatory prayer:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِىْ مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَ مَا اَخَّرْتُ
وَ مَا اَسْرَرْتُ وَ مَا اَعْلَنْتُ
وَ اِسْرَافِىْ عَلٰى نَفْسِىْ
وَ مَا اَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّىْ
اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ
وَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَى الْخَلْقِ اَجْمَعِيْنَ
مَا عَلِمْتَ الْحَيٰوةَ خَيْرًا لِىْ فَاَحْيِنِىْ
وَ تَوَفَّنِىْ اِذَا عَلِمْتَ الْوَفَاةَ خَيْرًا لِّىْ
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْئَلُكَ خَشْيَتَكَ
فِى السِّرِّ وَ الْعَلَانِيَةِ
وَ كَلِمَةَ الْحَقِّ فِى الْغَضَبِ وَ الرِّضَا
وَالْقَصْدَ فِى الْفَقْرِ وَالْغِنَا
وَ اَسْئَلُكَ نَعِيْمًا لَايَنْفَدُ
وَ قُرَّةَ عَيْنٍ لَّاتَنْقَطِعُ
وَ اَسْئَلُكَ الرِّضَا بِالْقَضَاۤءِ
وَ بَرَكَةَ الْمَوْتِ بَعْدَ الْعَيْشِ
بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ، وَ لَذَّةَ الْمَنْظَرِ اِلٰى وَجْهِكَ وَ شَوْقًا اِلٰى رُؤْيَتِكَ وَ لِقَاۤئِكَ مِنْ غَيْرِ ضَرَّاۤءَ مُضِرَّةٍ وَلَافِتْنَةٍ مُضِلَّةٍ اَللّٰهُمَّ زَيِّنَّا بِزِيْنَةِ الْاِيْمَانِ وَاجْعَلْنَا هُدَاةٍ مُهْتَدِيْنَ اَللّٰهُمَّ اهْدِنَا فِيْمَنْ هَدَيْتَ اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْئَلُكَ عَزِيْمَةَ الرَّشَادِ وَالثَّبَاتَ فِى الْاَمْرِ وَ الرُّشْدَ وَاَسْئَلُكَ شُكْرَ نِعْمَتِكَ وَ حُسْنَ عَافِيَتِكَ وَ اَدَاۤءَ حَقِّكَ وَاَسْئَلُكَ يَا رَبِّ قَلْبًا سَلِيْمًا وَ لِسَانًا صَادِقًا وَاَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا تَعْلَمُ وَ اَسْئَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا تَعْلَمُ وَ اَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا تَعْلَمُ فَاِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ وَلَانَعْلَمُ وَ اَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ۔
Fifth: Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) is reported to have said: Whoever say these words at every obligatory prayer, will have himself, his house, his property, and his children been under protection:
اُجِيْرُ نَفْسِىْ وَ مَالِىْ
وَ وَلَدِىْ وَ اَهْلِىْ وَ دَارِىْ
وَ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ مِنِّىْ
الَّذِىْ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَ لَمْ يُوْلَدْ
وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُوًا اَحَدٌ
وَ اُجِيْرُ نَفْسِىْ وَ مَالِىْ
وَ وَلَدِىْ وَ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ مِنِّىْ
وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ اِذَا وَقَبَ
وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ اِذَا حَسَدَ
وَ اُجِيْرُ نَفْسِىْ وَ مَالِىْ
مَا هُوَ مِنِّىْ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ اِلٰهِ النَّاسِ مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ الَّذِيْ يُوَسْوِسُ فِيْ صُدُوْرِ النَّاسِ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ وَ اُجِيْرُ نَفْسِىْ وَ مَالِىْ وَ وَلَدِىْ وَ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ مِنِّىْ بِاللّٰهِ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْحَىُّ الْقَيُّوْمُ لَا تَاْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَّلَانَوْمٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْاَرْضِ ۗ مَنْ ذَا الَّذِيْ يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ اِلَّا بِاِذْنِهِ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيْطُوْنَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ اِلَّا بِمَا شَاۤءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَئُوْدُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيْمُ۔
